As a leading cause of death in the United States, diabetes should be taken very
seriously. The staff at Novant Health Gaffney Medical Center believes knowledge is your
most powerful prescription for reducing the complications of this disease. Gaffney Medical Center's Diabetes Education Center has been recognized by the American
Diabetes Association for quality self-management education.
Our diabetes education services are available as an outpatient service to assist
patients in using the latest treatment tools and provides information to properly manage
their care. Our staff provide individual assessments to help determine which programs
suit your needs. Once your primary care physician refers you to the Gaffney
Medical Center Diabetes Education Center, we will contact you to schedule an appointment.
Based on information provided by you and your physician, our team will develop a
self-management plan. Our Diabetes Education Center staff includes a registered nurse and a registered dietitian who are certified diabetes educators. Our goal
is to work closely with you and your physician to provide remarkable care.
Diabetes Education Center Program
The program includes an initial individual appointment, two
follow-up class sessions and then additional follow-up sessions
at three- and six-month intervals. This program covers all of the basics of diabetes management.
- Pre-diabetes or Metabolic Syndrome Education: topics include understanding
health risks associated with diabetes, basic meal planning skills, carbohydrate
counting and portion control, label reading and finding and following an appropriate
- Diabetes Education: sessions include use of medications (oral
or insulin), self-monitoring of blood glucose, advanced carbohydrate counting, pattern
management, proper foot, skin and dental care, avoiding and treating hypoglycemia / hyperglycemia,
sick day rules and much more.
- Gestational Diabetes Education: a registered nurse or registered dietitian
provides information for expectant mothers about gestational diabetes. This includes facts about gestational diabetes, healthy eating, home blood glucose monitoring,
being active, and insulin administration (if needed).
Diabetes Support Group
Gaffney Medical Center offers a Diabetes Support Group to provide support
and education for people with diabetes and their families. This long-running group
meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:00pm in the hospital cafeteria. Guest
speakers present a variety of topics to keep you up-to-date on diabetes care. Meetings
are open to the public and free-of-charge.
