Digital Mammography
Digital Mammography shows great promise in the fight against breast cancer. UCMC is the only facility in Cherokee County to provide digital mammography. Computers and specially designed digital detectors produce images that appear on the technologist's monitor in a matter of seconds. This new technology allows the Radiologist to view and manipulate the image using high resolution computer monitors. In conjunction with the digital mammogram unit, UCMC offers CAD, which provides a "second read" of the mammogram by a computer.
The Mammography Department is accreditated by the American College of Radiology and meets all the required standards by the MQSA.
Mammograms are performed by technologists who are certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists
Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
Should further testing be needed, Stereotactic Breast Biopsy is available. This allows a precise sample of a breast lump to be removed through the use of a needle instead of an open surgical incision.
